Hornets knock off Grizzlies in Friday Night Thriller
Malik Monk scored 20 points including 14 in the fourth quarter and Marvin Williams made two 3-point baskets late in the fourth quarter to seal the Victory for the Charlotte Hornets over the Memphis Grizzlies, on Friday night at Spectrum Center, 100-92.
Here's our quarter-by-quarter recap...
1st QT - The Hornets were outplayed badly in the opening quarter by a Memphis Grizzlies team playing without its leading scorer, Mike Conley. Memphis was +8 in points in the paint (16-8) while shooting nearly 57 percent from the field. Mack, Holiday, and Rabb all scored eight points for the Grizzlies. 29-17 MEMPHIS
2nd QT - Tony Parker committed a foul early in the quarter and immediately left the floor and headed towards the locker-room. Parker was listed as PROBABLE on the team's injury report is dealing with a sore right ankle.
UPDATE ON PARKER - Returned to the game at the 2:44 mark (Hornets down 42-38)
2nd QT cont...The Hornets played much better defensively in this quarter, forcing four turnovers and holding Memphis to just 16 points. Tony Parker and Malik Monk combined for 14 points in the quarter as Charlotte heads to the locker room with all of the momentum. 45-45 TIE
3rd QT - Shelvin Mack scored eight points in this quarter as the Memphis Grizzlies head into the fourth and final quarter with the lead. Memphis has lost games in every imaginable way this week, so a win would be huge here. Despite Conley's absence, Justin Holiday (15 points) and Shelvin Mack (19 points) have stepped up big time. 73-70 MEMPHIS
4th QT - Malik Monk's solid bench play continues here late in the game. Monk has 16 points and Kemba Walker has scored 21 points. Despite their efforts, Charlotte is trailing late in this game...(89-85 w/4:47 left) MEMPHIS LEADS
4th QT cont...Marvin Williams nailed a three-pointer at 2:55 to tie it at 90-90, and another one at 2:17 to give Charlotte a 93-90 lead. For good measure, Williams connected on two free throws with 1:15 to give Charlotte a 96-90 lead.
The Hornets struggled all night with Memphis until the final three minutes of play. Malik Monk (20 points) Marvin Williams (16 points) were huge in this victory for the Hornets.
