Charlotte Knights National Anthem Auditions Featured Amazing Range of Talent

On a night, where the elements outside gave us every indication it was still winter, there was a hint of spring in the air at Queen City Q as the Charlotte Knights held auditions for an opportunity to sing the National Anthem on Tuesday night.

"This is the sixth year we are doing this (holding auditions) at the Queen City Q and it's kind of for us (Knights) that start of baseball season," said Tommy Viola, Knights VP Of Communications. "The start of the season is just 45 days away and we can't wait."

The event drew diverse talent from around North Carolina. Early in the auditions, a three-generation trio of saxophone players made their way to the stage. Minutes later, eight girl scouts performed in front of the judges.

“It can be a little intimidating at first,” said Jeff Sittloh, who told us that he’s performed at various ballparks and racetracks across the Carolinas. “I think if you’re not at least a little bit intimidated when you step in front of the judges, then you’re not in the right frame of mind.”

Most of the performers that we spoke to told us that the key to delivering a solid, live version of the Star-Spangled Banner is to remember the words, and to keep the integrity of the song by keeping the delivery simple.

“The best advice I can give someone who’s never performed the National Anthem in front of a large crowd is not to re-invent the wheel,” said Steven Daley. “As long as you hit the right notes and remember the verses, in their correct order, you’ll be fine.” Knights begin their regular season schedule on April 4th at BB&T Ballpark
