Charlotte Knights Hold off Durham Bulls for 12-11 Opening Night Win (Highlights)
The Charlotte Knights took the field for the first time in the 2019 season on Thursday night in front of the largest Opening Night crowd in the history of BB&T Ballpark. They finished the evening with a well earned win over their in-state rival Durham Bulls.
Knights starting pitcher Donny Roach struggled in the early goings allowing six runs on nine hits over three innings as Durham jumped out to an early lead. Durham's scoring efforts were kicked off by Andrew Velazquez who homered on a line drive to right field on the first at bat by an opponent this year. The solo home run put the Bulls up 1-0 which quickly turned into a 4-0 lead by the end of the 2nd inning.
The Knights battled back with clutch hitting from Catcher Zach Collins and Danny Mendick and a lineup that garnered 13 hits. By the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Knights had a 5-4 lead that would be overtaken in the 4th but quickly regained. The Knights never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game. RHP Zach Thompson made his debut for the Knights and earned the opening night win.
"When you step out on to that field and you see that backdrop with 10,000 fans screaming at you it's a lot of fun - it's excitement." Zach Collins said after the game.
The Knights continue their home-stand versus Durham on Friday night.
