The Charlotte Hornets have been making some noise with a series of new moves by the organization over the last month. The latest includes the beginning of the process to find a new head of basketball operations as current their General Manger transitions to a different role. President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak will transition into an advisory role once the new hire joins the organization.

In a release by the team, Kupchak said that the move was part of the plan for his involvement going back to the time of his last extension. “After signing my extension two years ago, the plan has always been for me to move to an advisory role after this season when my contract ends in June,” said Kupchak.

Kupchak, whose roster moves failed to deliver the Hornets' a deep playoff run under his watch, has been the organization's President of Basketball Operations & General Manager since 2018.

The move is arguably the biggest for the Hornets franchise since new majority owners Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin took over the organization. “Mitch’s success as an NBA executive speaks for itself and we thank Mitch for all his work during his six years leading our basketball operations,” said Schnall and Gabe Plotkin.

“His professionalism, integrity and commitment have been a major benefit to our franchise. We have built a strong relationship with Mitch during our time as owners. We are thrilled that he will remain with the franchise in an advisory capacity as his experience and knowledge of the NBA will be a valuable resource for our team as we move forward.”

Kupchak won 10 NBA titles during his career as a player and executive: a span that covers more than 30 years.
