The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors recently announced their 60th class of inductees. The list includes a distinguished group of people that have impacted the world of sports in the Carolinas for several decades.

Among those honored will be former Carolina Panthers great, Steve Smith Sr.

Smith was originally selected in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft. He played 13 seasons with the Carolina Panthers and is the team’s all-time leader in touchdowns (67), receptions (836) and receiving yards (12,197). Smith also played three years with the Baltimore Ravens.

The 2019 Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor inductee was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro who led the league in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns in 2005. He is one of just 54 players in NFL history to earn over 10,000 receiving yards. Smith also achieved 1,000 all-purpose yards in a season 11 times during his 16 NFL seasons.

Smith continues to be involved with the league through his role as a sports analyst for the NFL Network. He can now be seen each week giving his take on weekly matchups in addition to segments where he steps into the roles of other professionals around the sport such as a sideline cameraman.

The remaining list of inductees includes former NBA guard Randolph Childress, basketball great Sheila Ford Duncan, Olympic gold medalist Caroline Lind, former Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop, famed sports announcer Jim Nantz, NFL great Pettis Norman, Women's basketball player/coach Shea Ralph, Don Skakle, Marilyn "Que" Tucker and Ron Wellman.

The group of 11 will be enshrined during the 60th annual Induction Celebration on the

evening of Friday, May 10, at the Charlotte Convention Center, starting at 5 p.m.

“This year’s class joining the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is dynamic in many

ways,” said Dr. Jerry McGee, president of the hall’s Board of Directors. “Not only are they

part of a milestone group, given that this is the sixtieth Induction Celebration, they are

representative of the reach throughout the Charlotte community, the state of North Carolina,

the United States, and beyond.”

Tickets are on sale now for the Induction Celebration. Visit www.ncshof.org.
